Do you need a baby registry, or can family and friends just gift you directly?
Not every mother needs a registry, and it's a fair question to ask before setting one up. Here's what a registry actually solves, when you can skip it, and why it isn't really an either-or decision on GiftingNest anyway.
What a baby registry actually solves
The problem isn't that people don't want to help, it's that they don't know what you actually need. Without a list, you end up with three baby blankets and no diaper bag. A registry turns a vague question, what does she need, into a specific answer people can act on.
When direct gifting works fine without one
If it's mostly one or two close people handling things, your mother, your partner, someone who already knows exactly what you need and is happy to just get it, a registry adds a step you don't need. Direct gifting works fine when coordination isn't actually the problem.
When a registry makes more sense
Once more than a handful of people want to be involved, extended family, church group, coworkers, a registry is what keeps everyone from buying the same thing while the expensive items stay unfunded. It also lets people who can't cover a whole item contribute part of it instead of feeling like they can't help at all.
You can actually do both on GiftingNest
This isn't really a choice you have to commit to. You can shop directly for yourself with Add to cart or Buy now any time, no registry required, and still have a registry open for the people who want to gift you something. Most mothers end up doing both, buying some things themselves and letting loved ones cover the rest.
What makes this work in Nigeria specifically
- Gifting here is often a group affair, aunties, church members, coworkers, all wanting to contribute, which is exactly where a registry earns its keep.
- A registry link on WhatsApp reaches people a mailed list never would, especially relatives abroad who want to gift but can't shop for you in person.
- If it turns out only two or three people are involved, you've lost nothing, the registry costs nothing to have open even if it's lightly used.
